Bathroom Countertops

For years when a house was being built the bathroom countertops were all made of laminate. A laminate countertop is is made from MDF with sheets of laminate glued to the surface.

Even though there is getting to be some very beautiful laminate countertops on the market the majority of people we do bathroom renovations for want either a quartz countertop or a granite countertop installed.

When people renovate their bathroom they also go outside the box in some cases and install glass, concrete or a solid surface countertop.

Types of Bathroom Countertops

Laminate Countertops

The most common type is still a laminate countertop. Even just 10 years ago larger homes were still having this type of countertop installed in kitchens and bathrooms. This is the reason for the large amount of new stone countertop companies that you see springing up all over Edmonton.

Granite Countertops for Your Edmonton Bathroom

Granite can be found in many mountains throughout the world.

Granite is a natural product that was formed millions of years ago. During this formation period magna from the earth would cool and granite, quartz and other minerals formed as a hard rock inside the mountains.

Since there was many different minerals in many different areas of the world we get all sorts of different colors of granite.

In fact if you buy a piece of granite today and another one just three months from now there will be a difference. Maybe tough to tell until you place the two pieces side by side.

Granite is a very popular and highly sot after type of countertop. You will want to carefully consider this option.

Quartz Bathroom Countertops in Edmonton

Quartz countertops are made by taking 90% ground up particles of quartz and mixing with 10% resins to create a man made granite like product. The patent to create this product is owned by an Italian company called Breton. They license the patent to about half a dozen companies that turn around and create their own brand of quartz.
Unlike granite this product is non-porous and crack resistant. (Think of a watch that is water resistant, not water proof, quartz can crack.)

If you want a consistent look throughout and a more durable product than granite then quartz is the way to go.

Many granite companies will carry one of the lines of quartz as well.

Concrete Countertops in Your Bathroom

This can be a very good option if you are going for an industrial look in your bathroom.

Concrete countertop

Concrete is very porous and can stain very easily. You will have to maintain your concrete countertops on a yearly basis. Since these are going into your bathroom and not your kitchen there is a better chance that you will not stain them. You should still maintain them.

People like concrete because they can add colors and there are no seems as the product can be created right in your bathroom.

Since there is so much customization this countertop can be more expensive than stone.

Solid Surface Bathroom Countertops

These counters are made from an acrylic resin and come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. The big name brands are Corian from Dupont, Formica, Wilsonart, and Livingstone to name a few. Here in Edmonton the most common that I have seen are Formica and Corian. With so many people now buying stone there might be others creating solid surface products in Edmonton just not something I am aware of.

People like this product because of the cleanliness and can be made to have no seems. If you scratch your counter you can have it buffed out to look great again.

Glass Countertop for a Bathroom

There are a few manufacturers of glass countertops in North America. This product is very expensive at about $200+ per square foot. But results are something else. I have only worked on one glass countertop in Edmonton and with lighting behind it looked absolutely gorgeous.

For long term use or if you are selling your house and want a fast sale stone is the way to go.
